The Kottayam Port and Container Terminal Services Pvt. Ltd (KPACT) came up with a multimodal ICD and dry port, linked by inland waterways to Cochin Port. KPACT is promoted by the Kottayam-based South India Chamber of Commerce and Industry in which the state government holds 49 per cent stake through the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA). The project is connected by both road and inland waterways. The project is set up in public-private partnership.

The Port is a multi-modal Inland Container Depot (ICD) & Wet Port catering to Central Travancore Connected to the Cochin Port by road and by an inland waterway through “Vembanadu Lake” at a distance of 85 Kilometres. An estimated 6000 containers / year will be diverted from road to waterway. The port will facilitate and induce quick cost effective trouble free and custom cleared exports and imports from Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta. The Kottayam Port will use the Inland water way and the road from Kottayam to Cochin Port to ship its containers The cost effective option is to transport containers in barges. For quick deliveries containers are transported through road.

Kottayam port is the first private port inaugurated in December 2009. Kottayam Port have An air-conditioned 3 stories port office building with conference halls customs office, Port Conservators Office, etc…, a well planned road network inside the port area, compound wall surrounding whole port area with a good entry gate, 40000 sq. feet ware house with all facilities like forklifts, small movable cranes etc., and a barge capable to carry 10 containers at a time.
