Capital Dredging at Beypore Port to increase depth to 5.50 m

At present the available draught at Beypore port is 3 m. The lack of adequate draught have been restricting the movement of vessels to Beypore port, and hence Kerala Maritime Board has decided to increase the depth to 5.50 m. Capital Dredging is required to maintain the required depth at port.

The dredging of Beypore port was decided in a meeting convened in the Assembly. On basis of this, instruction was given to Hydrographic Survey Wing to calculate the quantity of materials to be removed. The present depth of approach channel is only 3.7 m. Because of this, big ships are unable to call Beypore Port. The depth of the channel and basin to be increased to 7.0 m in a phased manner. This will increase the capacity of Beypore port. For the last 8 years we have not carried out any capital dredging in Beypore Port. In the circumstances, Government are pleased to accord administrative sanction for capital dredging at Beypore port to increase depth to 5.50m at an estimated cost of Rs.11.80 crore (Rupees Eleven Crore and Eighty Lakhs Only).
