The Indian shipping industry plays a crucial role in the Indian economy as 90% of the Nation's trade by volume is done via sea. India has the largest merchant shipping fleet among the developing nations. Ship building industry is very strategic for any country owing to the significance of ships in both trade and also national defence. Ships play a major role in transportation of oil and gas and most of the crucial commodities which run the economy. Shipbuilding industry provides facilities for building various types of ships/vessels such as oil tankers, bulk carriers, cargo vessels, gas carriers and product carriers etc.

The current Indian market dry dock capacity and the current regional market were assessed. There are currently two publicly available facilities in Goa and Cochin. Cochin is considering expansion of its facilities in Cochin Shipyard Ltd and wherein Goa, new private entrants are seeking permissions for fixed dry docks. Along the northwest coast of the India, there are some 20 dry dock facilities available including Naval docks and smaller units. In accordance with the field survey data more than 228 vessels are present on the west coast in the dimension range upto 110 meters overall length. All the vessels are in requirement of dry dock facility that can be availed in waiting period not more than 15 days.There is an urgent need of a state of art floating dry dock facility to cater to the repairs, and maintenance needs of a ship upto 100 m OR 110 m in overall length.
