Renovation/Repair, Reconstruction of Valiyathura Pier

The pier situated at Valiyathura is one of the best centre of Tourist attractions in Thiruvananthapuram city. The existing pier has a length of 214m. It was constructed in 1956. The pier is used by the fishermen for carrying their catamarams to the edge of the pier and throwing them into the sea, then diving into the waters and swimming towards it during monsoon season and is a spectacle eye watching element of Valiyathura pier. The pier is considered as a heritage structure. The cyclone took 15th May 2021 and the battering of waves damaged the pier. Cracks were developed on the top slab and girder due to sinkage of second to tenth column on both sides. Due to the cracks and sinkage in the pier the entry in the pier is now closed. During the visit of the Ministers of Kerala. directions were issued to rectify the damages of the pier by using modem technology and re- construct the sunken portion for a length of 50m from land. To maintain its heritage status, its restoration is urgently required. This pier shall be maintained as heritage centers, attracting tourists. In the 23 Kerala Maritime Board meeting held on 10/06/2022 it was decided to renovate the Valiyathura pier.
