Overview
When the Portuguese and the British came to Calicut in search of pepper, known as black gold, and other spices, the Samoothirs welcomed them for commercial gain. But their aim was to acquire a trade monopoly. Apart from foreigners, many people from within the country came to Kozhikode for business. The heyday of the Samoothirs came to an end when the British Malabar province became its headquarters. The East India Company developed Kozhikode port by constructing two sea bridges. Many prominent companies collected and exported goods through Kozhikode port and made huge profits.
