Overview
Trivandrum port, is also known as Valiyathura port was one of the early ports in south Kerala is located 15 kilometers north to the Kovalam/Vizhinjam port. Valiyathura in local language means 'Big Port'. There is a 703 feet long concrete pier which still survives the furious sea. The old pier stands at Valiyathura as a remnant of the golden past and is being protected by the State Government. Ancient scripts say that, Trivandrum port (Valiyathura) once had the capacity to handle a minimum of 50 cargo ships at a time. Trivandrum pier was declared inactive in the early eighties. Coir products formed a big chunk of exports through the port. It is located 2 kilometres from Trivandrum International Airport.
